Florida government wants your opinion on water resources

The Southwest Florida Water Management District, a government agency that protests water resources in 16 counties, including Manatee and Sarasota, is seeking public input regarding withdrawals from lakes, rivers, streams and aquifers in the district.

A public meeting will be held on Oct. 1 between 6 - 8 p.m. at the district’s Tampa office located at 7601 U.S. Highway 301. The district will receive public input on a priority schedule it plans to implement on  water withdrawals. An abundance of withdrawals can cause significant harm to the water resources or environment and the district sets limits to balance human water needs and water needs for Florida's natural systems.

The adopted Minimum Flows and Levels Priority List and Schedule for 2012 is available on the District’s website at www.watermatters.org/mfl/.

Residents can send comments about the draft to Doug Leeper, chief environmental scientist, at doug.leeper@watermatters.org or 2379 Broad Street, Brooksville, Florida, 34604-6899 no later than Oct. 17.

For more information, contact Doug Leeper at 1-800-423-1476, ext. 4272.
